Paint Specifications
Paint It To Reflect Your Style
LP® SmartSide® offers you the flexibility of dramatically changing the look of your home with paint. By following the LP SmartSide paint specifications, you can help your LP SmartSide Trim & Siding look its best for many years to come.
Choose Your Paint
When painting or repainting, choose an exterior 100 percent acrylic latex paint or a premium latex blend. Make sure the paint is recommended for factory primed wood composite siding and comes with a minimum five-year warranty. Although not recommended, satin and semi-gloss oil-based paints can be used.
Prepare the Surface
Once your siding is installed, you can wait up to 120 days for conditions suitable for the application of a good quality latex paint. Start your preparation by removing all dust and mildew from the surface by washing your siding with a cleaning brush, starting at the top and working your way down. Do not use a pressure washer.
Apply the Paint
Once your surfaces are clean and dry, paint may be applied using a sprayer, roller or brush. If you use a sprayer or roller, you'll need to pay special attention that the bottom edges are covered with paint. We recommend applying two coats of unthinned paint at the manufacturer's required spread rate.
Most acrylic latex paints should not be applied below 50° F (10°C). There are companies that make paints designed for application in lower temperatures.
Maintaining Your Paint
To help keep your LP SmartSide siding and trim looking beautiful, periodic repainting is necessary. Sun and rain exposure will cause the original paint to become thin with time.
There are many factors, including the type, quality, application method and amount of paint originally used, that will determine how long your paint will last. On average, we recommend repainting every three to five years to help protect your home and maintain an attractive appearance.
