What’s That You Say? LP Transforms Soundproofing Construction

If you live in an older home, or a multi-unit facility, you’ve likely experienced the elephant-footed neighbor above you, or the partiers to your left who blast music until the wee hours of the morning.

When it comes to construction, especially in multifamily housing, soundproofing is a much appreciated and treasured quality to the resident. However, it is a luxury you often don’t realize you have until you don’t have it.

Some LP products, such as LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing, carry an impressive Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating as high as 61, while also serving as a code-compliant component of fire-rated wall assemblies. This means that a wall made with LP FlameBlock helps reduce even very loud noise from a neighboring unit from passing through. Likewise, LP® SolidStart® Fire-Rated Floor Assemblies pack impressive Insulation Impact Class (IIC) ratings of up to 60, drastically reducing the sound that passes through flooring.

Today's International Building Code requires multifamily housing to have STC ratings of 50, leaving room for disrupting sound to enter your home. But with LP’s innovation and thoughtful design, LP FlameBlock and LP SolidStart floor assemblies are able to take the ratings up to 11 points higher, offering the sound barrier that is becoming a requested feature in many upscale apartments and condos. LP products can help reduce both the noise from an adjoining apartment and the sound impact from a unit above, leaving you with a quieter home.
