3 Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Shed and Garage

Spring cleaning is a must to get rid of winter grime inside your home, but don’t overlook your outdoor shed when working through your spring cleaning checklist. This storage space also needs regular attention. Organizing the tools and equipment that you need for landscaping projects and outdoor activities will save you time throughout the spring and summer. Follow these tips to make the most of your shed or garage this year!

Get More Floor Space

Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to organize your shed and create more usable space inside the structure. Begin by removing everything from the shed. Clean the windows and sweep out leaves, dust and grime that accumulated over the winter. Next, determine which items you want to keep, and which you will donate or discard. If you have shovels, rakes and other tools taking up valuable floor space, use a pegboard wall, a trellis organizer or other storage solutions to get organized quickly. The tools will be out of the way but easy to find when you need them.

Prep for Pests

Do spiders, wasps, mice and other pests like to call your outdoor shed home? Keep your shed and the items you store inside safe by carefully inspecting for places where pests can enter. Seal cracks and crevices with caulk, and eliminate sources of food and water that could attract insects and rodents. Be sure to store pet food, garden seeds and trash in closed containers with tightly sealed lids. Learn more about how to keep your structure pest-free.

Organize Equipment

Before moving everything back into storage, consider which items you will need to access most often in the coming months. Snow equipment and Christmas decorations should be stashed away near the rear of the shed. Your lawn mower, trimmer and other garden equipment will probably see the most use, so make sure you locate them near the door so you can access them easily. Make sure all items you store are in working order and clean enough to put away. Learn how to store winter snow equipment in the off-season.
