Choosing the Right Shed Shape for You

Sheds built with LP® products are an attractive and versatile solution to your storage needs. A storage shed can be designed to your unique requirements, and can range in size from a small doghouse to a large, two-story garage or a hangout area. With the genuine cedar grain texture of LP engineered wood, your shed can also have a beautiful appearance that complements the architecture and look of your home.

Common Shed Shapes

There are several factors to consider before buying a shed. How the shed will be used is one of the most important. Another is how your shed structure should be designed. The overall shape of the shed will have an effect on cost, usefulness, curb appeal and even where the shed can be placed. Here are four distinct shed building shapes to consider.
Barn sheds feature a gambrel-style roof. Because the rafters are raised, the barn shed offers the most storage space in the attic when compared to a shed with a gabled roof. The extra overhead loft space is convenient for storage of tall items, and can even be converted to an extra room as seen in this episode of He Shed She Shed.

Cottage sheds feature traditional A-frame construction, with the door located at one end of the structure. When the entrance is located on the gable end, it allows for taller doors (such as garage doors) to be installed.

Ranch-style sheds are A-frame sheds that have the door located on the side, which is a wall that runs parallel with the roof ridge. This design is desirable when a front-facing entrance is needed, as seen in Susan’s shed, and works well with partial porch configurations.

A saltbox shed features a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back. The asymmetrical design is a good option in northern climates because it encourages rain and snow to slide off the roof.

Find a Shed Dealer

Once you have decided how your shed will be used and which shed shape you prefer, LP’s size selector tool can help you evaluate shed sizes and determine what size best fits your needs. We also advise that you consult a shed dealer for information about the type of shed foundation you need. To see outdoor sheds built with LP products, find a shed dealer near you.
