How to Keep Pests Under Control in Outdoor Storage Sheds & Garages

Left unchecked, a couple of mice, spiders or other pests in or around outdoor storage sheds can become a full-blown invasion within just a few months. Not only are these creatures a nuisance, they can also be a health hazard and contribute to the deterioration of your shed and the items you’re storing inside. Here are some of the best ways to keep your shed or garage pest-free this season.

Tried-and-True Pest Control

  • Eliminate food and water sources. Odors attract rodents, so keep garden seeds, pet food, trash and any other items that could be eaten in closed, nonporous containers with tight-fitting lids. Also check your structure for water leaks and plumbing drips that could provide a breeding ground for insects or a water supply for rodents. If you have a spider infestation, try to get rid of other insects first (their food source) and your spider problem may resolve itself.
  • Seal cracks and crevices. Carefully inspect your garage, shed or barn for places where pests can enter, keeping in mind that a mouse can squeeze through an opening as small as ¼-inch! Look for gaps around windows and doors, and cracks in garage and shed floors. When you find an opening, seal it with caulk.
  • Cut down on clutter. Piles of wood, cardboard, rags and other clutter serve as ideal places for pests to hide. Clean out your shed or garage regularly to prevent pests from making your outdoor structure their home. You can also learn tips on how to organize your shed and get more out of the space.
  • Choose the right pesticide. If necessary, choose a pesticide specifically labeled to treat your pest problem, and always follow label instructions and safety warnings. If you still can’t eliminate pests, considering hiring a pest control company.
