LP 20-Year Employee Spotlight: Jerry Hiukka of Two Harbors, Minnesota
by Amy Lindholm, September 21, 2017
For a company, 20 years of successful operation comes at the hands of countless hard-working people. LP is proud to honor another of the employees who has contributed to our achievements over the past two decades: Jerry Hiukka.
A Career Well-Spent
Jerry Hiukka works as the Electrical Team Leader at the LP mill located in Two Harbors, Minnesota. His job responsibilities include assigning daily projects to all shift electricians and day electricians, as well as training and assisting members of the electrical team. Together, Jerry and his team oversee all site operation of electrical equipment, which includes keeping motors and lights running, and troubleshooting equipment when it goes down.
For Jerry, his current position is a natural progression for someone who has worked at the Two Harbors mill since 1988. “I started as an electrical helper, then became a shift electrician and finally the lead electrician around 1994,” says Jerry. “For me, the benefits of the job are more than the paycheck and the vacation. We do a large variety of jobs electrically – sometimes it’s installing equipment, sometimes it’s troubleshooting. It’s not the same thing every day. Our jobs are challenging and that keeps me from getting bored.”
‘A Quality Product Without Question’
Over the past 20 years, Jerry has seen company safety move in a very positive direction. “At LP, there is a huge focus on safety,” he notes. “Management is committed to doing things safely so no one gets hurt. They will slow things down if needed.” He has also watched a major evolution in manufacturing technology, from push buttons on the equipment to HMI (Human Machine Interface) touchscreens that allow workers to easily monitor the manufacturing process.
Spending your career at one company is only a good idea if you truly believe in the product that’s being produced, and Jerry does. “LP is set apart from other companies by its outstanding engineered wood siding products,” he explains. “We put out a quality product without question, and it’s covered by a killer 50-year limited warranty.”
Jerry plans to retire in five to seven years, but he hopes that his hard work will have inspired other members of the LP team. “I’d like to see the younger guys keep the place running for another 30 years,” he says. He also looks forward to seeing LP grow as a company. “Currently, our siding products make up only a percentage of all siding materials installed. I hope to see us take up a large share of the siding market and successfully fulfill that demand.”
LP gratefully acknowledges Jerry Hiukka and all of the hardworking employees that make our company exceptional. Happy 20th birthday, LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding! The future is looking bright.
