LP and Environmental Responsibility
by Amy Lindholm, June 5, 2016
It’s World Environment Day! World Environment Day was established by the United Nations as a way to encourage worldwide awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment. On this day, we are all encouraged to do something to take care of the earth and become an agent of change.
Sustainable Sources of Wood Fiber
Choosing to build with LP® SmartSide® products is a great way to conserve natural resources by making responsible use of available wood. Our products begin with wood, a renewable natural resource. All of the forests directly managed by LP in North America are certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Standard. Sustainable forests are utilized in a way that maintains wildlife habitat and water quality, and conserves the soil. We encourage the same practices for forests where we source wood but don’t own or manage the land.
Trees for the Future
LP invests in reforestation and helps landowners to oversee the operations of thousands of acres of forests that produce our wood supply. On lands we manage, we reforest within two years of final harvest or within five years when using planned natural regeneration. By practicing sustainable forestry, we can meet current demands for wood products without compromising the future of our forests.
You can’t produce a product of any kind without energy. LP’s manufacturing facilities all use comprehensive environmental management systems to minimize waste as well as promote air and water quality when producing engineered wood siding and trim products. In addition, we use virtually every bit of our wood, even burning the bark to power the plant.
