The Use of LP SolidStart Engineered Wood Products, LP SmartSide Soffit, and other engineered wood products for residential framing

Founded in 1975, Erickson Building Components claims a dedication to delivering the highest quality, on-time service at the best possible price. Erickson is a framing subcontractor headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, servicing builders in California, Arizona, and North Carolina. Additionally, Erickson provides its customers with door and trim services.

Erickson had been using a line of products from another well-known manufacturer of engineered wood products. Erickson said they saw that LP Building Products offered a variety of high-quality engineered products at a competitive price point. Although price was one of the initial reasons for the switch, Erickson found that LP products were strong and easy to work with.

Erickson selected a host of LP products. “Pricing was the original reason we switched,” said Tyler Rhodes, commodity manager for Erickson. “LP products are high quality and a lot more competitive; so we jumped ship and ran with it.” But Erickson has found additional savings.

“Using LP products helps us save on labor costs. When it comes to installation and efficiency, engineered wood beats competing lumber products. It’s ready to go. You just make your cut, put it in, and you’re done. Other products require extra steps,” Rhodes said.

Since changing to LP Building Products, Erickson said they found more than a competitive price in the products especially when it comes to LP® SolidStart® LSL and LVL and LP® SmartSide® Soffit.

“The strength of the LSL and LVL really stands out. We’ve never had any issue with bad LSL or bad LVL for our door and wall headers,” Rhodes said. “And as we’re starting to trickle into the San Francisco Bay area, we’ve been using a lot of those products. They are ideal in high seismic areas.”

Recognized for strength and consistency, LP SolidStart LSL and LVL are also free of knots and splits common to traditional lumber. And because LP products are straight and resist twisting and shrinking, they’re well suited for roof and floor beams, door and window headers, and wall framing.

“LP products have also stood out to us because of their warranty, especially on the soffit products,” Rhodes said. LP SmartSide Trim & Siding has an industry-leading 5/50-Year Limited Warranty, which includes a 5-year, 100 percent labor and replacement feature on the product. This covers the original homeowner and can be transferred to the next owner.

“It’s really resistant to weather. We never have to go back and rip off roof and tile to replace product because the soffit does its job. That saves us from a lot of callbacks,” Rhodes said. The state-of-the-art SmartGuard® manufacturing process helps protect against termite damage and fungal decay, allowing the LP SmartSide Soffit to withstand extreme outside temperatures, humidity and rainfall.

For Erickson Building Components, LP Building Products has been the supplier of choice for the past four years. Some of the builders Erickson works with specify the products they wan used on a home, but Erickson has had success converting builders to LP products.

“With LP, you get competitively priced quality products that are widely available and easily accessible,” Rhodes said.

Erickson also uses a number of other products when specified, including LP® TechShield® Radiant Barrier Sheathing, LP® TopNotch® 350, LP OSB Sheathing, LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing, LP SmartSide Trim, and LP SolidStart I-Joists.
