Drawing on over 125 years of experience, Huttig Building Products serves contractors and building professionals in 41 states through 27 distribution centers around the nation. Huttig Building Products is one of the largest distributors of millwork and specialty products for light commercial and residential construction as well as specialty projects.
Their customer base includes national and independent building material dealers, national buying groups, home centers and industrial users, including makers of manufactured homes.
Huttig Building Products prides itself on offering its dealers and builders the products their customers demand at the best possible prices. Part of this includes using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software to produce real-world views of designs and highly accurate materials lists.
When it comes to CAD-based programs, Aaron Hulse, engineer design technician with Huttig Building Products, relies on LP Solutions Software. He’s a member of the LP® SolutionsTM Club 1,000, a designation that indicates he’s completed 1,000 jobs using the software.
Hulse knows the program inside and out. In addition to using it on over 1,000 designs, he’s used it from the beginning as a beta tester when the program was being developed.
LP Solutions Software is a whole-house CAD-based design program offered to LP® SolidStart® Engineered Wood Products customers. Like any good software program, it is intended to be practical and easy to learn, as well as intuitive.
The program includes a variety of tools to help designers create more efficient and problem-free designs. It offers both 2D and 3D views of the design. However, the unique 3D view allows designers to see multiple layers and immediately find potential errors. As an integrated design feature, it also allows users to shift easily between 2D and 3D views.
“I use the 3D aspect quite often,” Hulse said. “With this software, it is a very quick transition from 2D to 3D.”
In addition to the 3D view, the program uses renderings, giving designs a life-like appearance, showing designers exactly how the program is going to frame the house.
Additionally, the program offers a unique engineering feature that enables a user to design floors, including load transfers from floor to floor in multi-story homes. The parametric modeling feature allows users to move walls, beams and other objects while retaining the proper relationship with everything connected to it.
The program also develops accurate materials lists, it easily links to machinery and accounting systems, as well as other business software, allowing you to streamline operations.
According to Hulse, LP Solutions Software has sped up the design process for him, and time is money. It has also offered Hulse more accurate materials lists, and he’s found the engineering features very useful.
“I started using it about two and a half years ago, and I’ve just kept using it,” Hulse said. He said he likes that he can manipulate the different layers in the program, which helps him know what’s going on in the design of the building.
Hulse also added that he’s found the program to be very customizable. “I’ve been incorporating different products into it with no problems,” Hulse said.
