Becovic Management Group of Indiana owns and manages all the properties it builds. In selecting trim and siding for The Preserve at Willow Springs, a 90-unit master planned community dedicated to preserving the beauty of nature in suburban Indianapolis, Becovic was looking for long-term dependability. In addition, Becovic wanted a trim and siding product that would be easier to install. For these reasons, they chose LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding.
The Preserve at Willow Springs is noted for its amenities, which include a spacious pool, landscaped garden and walking trails. The community has already achieved the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) gold rating, thanks in part to its high-efficiency insulation and innovation in water conservation.
Residents also have a discerning aesthetic eye. The building exteriors feature a lot of different color schemes and textures, including board and batten. Becovic wanted to use a siding product that produced very little breakage or waste, yet would combine rugged reliability with a wide range of colors and finishes.
“I used to do all the Habitat for Humanity construction here in Hamilton County,” says Randy McKnight, Becovic’s president of construction. “For those projects, you want a product that’s easy to use and manage—and doesn’t result in a lot of breakage or waste. I had heard that LP SmartSide Trim & Siding performed well in those circumstances, and we decided it was the best choice for The Preserve at Willow Springs.”
Becovic installed LP® SolidStart® LSL in the headers and later used LP SmartSide Trim & Siding for the property’s siding. It was the first time Becovic had used the product. He also used LP SmartSide Soffit Panels and cut-to-width vented soffit panels.
“Our local LP rep was very helpful before and during construction,” adds McKnight. “He’s only a phone call away, and he was happy to visit the jobsite to show our crew how LP SmartSide Trim & Siding should be applied from a warranty standpoint. That can help minimize problems five or 10 years in the future.”
As promised, LP SmartSide Trim & Siding was easier to install—and there was very little breakage or waste during application. The product gave builders a lot of creative options for exterior finishes.
“In the past, we’ve had trouble with fiber cement siding that required extensive maintenance about seven years after installation,” says McKnight. “I don’t foresee that happening with LP SmartSide Trim & Siding.”
Becovic plans to use LP SmartSide Trim & Siding on a 156-unit project called Ocean Blue that will break ground later this summer in Atlantic Beach, Florida.
“For the Florida project, the designs are done but the specs aren’t written yet,” says McKnight. “But we really like LP SmartSide Trim & Siding, and we have no plans to use anything different.”
