LP® TechShield® Radiant Barrier Saves Georgia Homeowner Money

Premium roof panel curbs overall cooling costs by lowering attic temperature

Summary

Kerry Langley is a homeowner in the Atlanta area who wanted to use innovative methods to reduce energy consumption while building a new home in 2003. Through his research, Langley came across LP® TechShield® Radiant Barrier and used it for the roof panel in his new build.

In a warm climate like Atlanta, a premium product like LP TechShield Radiant Barrier can block up to 97% of the radiant heat in the roof panel from emitting into a home’s attic. By only incrementally increasing the cost of his homebuilding project, Langley was able to significantly reduce the heat entering his home via the attic and therefore lower cooling costs for ongoing savings.

Objectives

As a homeowner, Langley had a different perspective on LP TechShield Radiant Barrier than an architect or builder would have. Instead of focusing solely on future cost savings, Langley looked to his past homes for things to improve. In 1988, Langley noticed that the roof on the back of his former west-facing home was incredibly hot. This was causing the inside of his home to be warmer and forcing him to use the air conditioner more to cool the internal temperature. While unaware of how to combat this issue at the time, it was something he revisited when building his new home in 2003.

After finding LP TechShield Radiant Barrier through his research, he spoke with his builder about incorporating it into the roof of his new home. His builder wanted to continue building without it, but Langley pushed back and insisted on including the original brand of radiant barrier sheathing.

Implementation

As very hands-on homeowners, Langley and his wife were at the jobsite nearly every day during the buildout of their home, weighing in on many choices themselves rather than leaving it to the builder to solely decide. They both believed that the inclusion of LP® TechShield® Radiant Barrier was pivotal to the comfort of their home, once complete. “It worked like a charm, the performance was absolutely amazing,” said Langley. “I was focused on anything I could do to cut down on the heat in the attic space, and LP TechShield Radiant Barrier was exactly what I was looking for.”

Outcome

The Langleys have since relocated into a pre-owned home, but plan on using LP TechShield Radiant Barrier in their next homebuilding adventure. Langley gave LP TechShield Radiant Barrier the ultimate stamp of approval. Said Langley, “At the end of the day, it was the best expenditure of money I’ve ever made when it comes to building houses, and I’ve built six.”
