Vertical Siding Options and Benefits with LP® SmartSide® Siding

LP® SmartSide® vertical siding provides a durable, versatile option for builders interested in providing their clients with a new look for their homes. There are many vertical siding options that tap into new trends in house siding.

Additionally, LP SmartSide vertical siding has been chosen by numerous professionals as one of the most durable siding options on the market today. We caught up with Kyle Stumpenhorst, owner of RR Buildings, and Erik Perkins of Perkins Builder Brothers to discuss why they choose LP SmartSide vertical siding over its top competitors and to get some new vertical siding ideas.

Benefits of Engineered Wood Siding

“I prefer LP SmartSide vertical siding over fiber cement siding for many reasons,” Stumpenhorst says, “but first and foremost is the durability difference.” When it comes to the benefits of engineered wood siding, durability stands out and impacts many other aspects of using the product.

  • Installation: “One person can carry, cut and install without using kid gloves or worrying about damaging the piece of siding,” Stumpenhorst adds. “Additionally, when we install it inside, we don’t need to worry about using special equipment to deal with the dust like we would with fiber cement.” To learn how to install vertical siding, be sure to check out the vertical siding installation instructions here.

  • Weight: LP SmartSide siding boasts significantly lighter weights compared to fiber cement, which makes it easier to handle. “Fiber cement is extremely heavy and can be damaged as you’re muscling it into place,” Perkins says.

  • Dimensions: “The ability to use 16-foot pieces means more coverage and a faster install,” Stumpenhorst says. This increased efficiency can mean more jobs in less time—and a boost to your bottom line.

LP SmartSide Vertical Siding Options

LP SmartSide vertical siding options include two siding textures: cedar texture and smooth finish. Each piece of vertical siding measures 16 feet by 16 inches and 0.354 inches thick. While some fiber cement manufacturers do not offer vertical options, LP SmartSide Trim & Siding is proud to manufacture exterior vertical siding options for increased versatility in what builders can offer their clients.

“A lot of homeowners want to have curb appeal, and they sometimes don’t know how to do it,” says Perkins. “Vertical siding offers a unique approach to a home’s exterior as opposed to traditional lap siding.”

Vertical Siding Ideas

Because siding is the finishing touch to a home’s exterior, it impacts the final look and the home’s overall curb appeal more than other features. Having plenty of exterior vertical siding ideas to give your clients is critical to helping them achieve the look they want. “I’ve completed whole projects of all vertical siding as well as using it as an accent,” Perkins says. Let’s take a look at a few options.

  • Entire Home: Vertical siding works as a durable solution for a home’s complete exterior. For clients looking for standout curb appeal that differs from traditional lap siding, choosing vertical siding for the entire house can be a great option. • Board and Batten: One popular way to use vertical siding is to create board and batten style siding with batten strips. This style is one of many popular exterior home design trends, and you may come across many clients who want to try it out.

  • Accents: Vertical siding can be a great way to break up the type of siding you use on different levels of a home to increase interest as the eye takes in the home’s exterior. Not only does it offer an aesthetic appeal, “if you’re installing vertical siding on a gable end, you want LP SmartSide vertical siding,” Perkins says. “If you need to adjust a cut, you can use a regular saw for easy angle adjustments.”
