Why Sustainable Building Matters
Earth Day is a reminder that the materials used in construction have a lasting impact on the environment. Choosing durable products can potentially help reduce waste, support efficiency, and create long-lasting homes. From responsible sourcing to community initiatives, LP has a commitment to environmental impact.
Sustainability at LP
Sustainability is at the core of our business, influencing how we govern, how we care for our people, innovate our products, serve our communities and uphold the highest standards for environmental stewardship.
From how materials are sourced to how products are made, every step is an opportunity to reduce environmental impact and build more efficiently. Our approach to sustainability focuses on using resources responsibly and help minimize waste.
“At LP, sustainability means caring for our forests, manufacturing responsibly, and creating long‑lasting products—while strengthening the communities where we live and work.” [Jenni Galiotto, Director, Sustainability & Public Policy], LP Building Solutions
Reduce Impact, Sustainable Solutions
Engineered wood products are helping drive more sustainable construction. Our products are sourced predominantly from renewable resources and offer builders a durable, sustainable alternative to nonrenewable, energy-intensive options. LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding is an example of how thoughtful material choices can support a sustainable future without compromising performance or style.
At LP, we create building products that lock in carbon previously stored in trees. These products continue to store carbon for the life of the residential and commercial buildings. This helps reduce its overall carbon footprint compared to many traditional exterior materials.
The Power of Partnerships
Progress doesn’t happen in isolation. LP works alongside forestry partners, builders, and communities to help drive more sustainable practices across the country. From fires to student volunteers, seven LP mill locations have awarded community grants to local environmental causes:
LP Green Bay: Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest park in the Green Bay park system and home to the largest wildlife rehabilitation program in Wisconsin.

LP Hayward:
The Landmark Conservancy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving wild and scenic places in 20 Wisconsin counties while ensuring natural areas remain accessible for generations to come.
LP Roxboro:
North Carolina Prescribed Fire Council, a coalition dedicated to reducing wildfire risk and protecting local habitats.
LP Sagola:
West Iron County Public Schools Forestry Club, an extracurricular educational program that volunteers to support local environmental efforts, such as building barriers on local lakes to control invasive species. This team of 30 high school students had been doing their work without the proper personal protective equipment, such as waders, snowshoes, and gloves, so LP’s support will help protect these environmental enthusiasts while they perform their tasks safely in the future.
LP Swan Valley:
Swan Lake Watershed District, an organization dedicated to conservation efforts towards protection, restoration, and management of land, water, aquatic ecosystems, and drinking water sources.
LP JYB:
Signature Bois Laurentides, a nonprofit focused on promoting forest products through the renewal and development of natural resources, workforce development, connection building, and more.
In 2025, LP partnered with the National Forest Foundation’s Sapling program to support reforestation, funding the planting of 720 trees in National Forests impacted by wildfire and disease. The effort included engagement with builders and contractors, fostering dialogue around sustainable forestry, responsible sourcing, and the role of wood products in a lower‑carbon future.

This Earth Day, we’re proud to announce a new partnership with the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society to support sustainable forest management and healthier wildlife habitat across Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Healthy, well‑managed forests are essential—for wildlife, local communities and the renewable wood fiber that goes into every LP® product. This collaboration reflects our long‑standing commitment to responsible forest stewardship in the regions where we operate.
Sustainability is a shared responsibility. By continuing to invest in better practices and strong partnerships, LP is committed to Building a Better World™ and helping shape the future of building!
