LP Building Products: Leading the Industry in Safety

LP again had the best overall safety record in the American Forest & Paper Association’s (AF&PA) annual safety benchmark review. Participation in the survey was voluntary and covered the 2015 calendar year. This year, 35 companies participated in the survey.

According to its website, the AF&PA is the national trade association of the forest products industry and advances public policies that promote a strong and sustainable U.S. forest products industry in the global marketplace. As part of the AF&PA’s Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability goals, the organization has set a “vision for the industry of zero injuries and measuring progress toward that vision by further improving our incidence rate by 25 percent from 2006 to 2020.”

To compare incidence rates across the respondents as part of the annual safety benchmark review, the AF&PA looked at each group’s respective Total Incident Rate (TIR). The TIR is a mathematical calculation that describes the number of recordable incidents per 100 full-time employees in any given time frame. LP had an overall Total Incident Rate (TIR) of 0.49 in the AF&PA review, which was lowest of all 35 companies. The average TIR for all companies was 1.41 while the highest was 7.19.

LP also ranked lowest in days away from work due to injury, with a Lost Workday Cases Rate with Days Away from Work of 0.12.

“This benchmark survey validates our solid safety and health processes,” said Keith Harned, LP’s Corporate Health and Safety Director.  “While we are pleased with the results, our goal for all injuries remains zero.”

We thank all our employees for their continued dedication to safety on and off the job. To read more about LP’s corporate commitment to safety, please visit the Values & Vision section of our website.
