AIA Advocates for Tighter Building Code Regulations in Wake of Hurricanes

Earlier this month, the American Institute of Architects released a statement urging policymakers to reject any weakening of U.S. building codes. The announcement came just weeks after Hurricane Harvey and Irma caused massive damage to thousands of homes and businesses.

As Texas and Florida begin to rebuild, the AIA is adamant that now is not the time to roll back rules on building infrastructure, particularly on public buildings.

"As we look toward eventually rebuilding in Texas and Florida, state and federal legislators must reject attempts to roll back protections that make good design and careful planning the hallmarks of U.S. construction," said AIA President Thomas Vonier, FAIA."Designing buildings to minimize damage from such natural disasters as hurricanes matters not only for public health, safety, and welfare; it also makes complete economic sense.”

At LP, we are proud partners of both the AIA and the International Code Council. We are committed to creating engineered wood products that efficiently meet code and provide resilient building solutions. As a part of this commitment, we offer courses through LP University as a service devoted to providing continuing education to those in the building trades.

We look forward to serving as a resource for Texas and Florida as they rebuild structures that are well designed, safe and code-compliant.
