3 Large-Scale DIY Projects to Tackle This Spring
by Parry Grimm, March 8, 2018
With spring just around the corner and summer following close behind, now is the time to begin planning those outdoor projects that require a bit of extra preparation.
- Over-seed your lawn. Over-seeding your lawn can fill in bare spots and give it a lusher appearance while naturally crowding out weeds. The cooler temperatures and ample moisture of springtime can give an over-seeded lawn a good head start on growth. Choose a high-quality grass seed that is appropriate for your climate. Prepare your lawn by mowing the grass short and bagging the clippings, then raking to loosen the soil and remove debris. Spread the seed as directed. Water the over-seeded area at least once daily until the seedlings have reached the height of your existing lawn.
- Install a pergola. A pergola may be just the touch you need to define your outdoor space and bring landscaping to life. Pergola kits are widely available for purchase at home improvement stores, or follow these DIY instructions on how to build a pergola. Keep in mind that pergolas do not provide much shade, so you may want to locate your pergola near shade trees or in a location out of late-afternoon sun.
- Build a shed. Is your garage overflowing with stored items, while your lawnmower and tools sit outside, exposed to the elements? Spring is a great time to get a storage shed to free up space in your garage, plus accommodate all the other equipment and supplies you want to keep inside, from your lawnmower to your mulch.
