LP® SmartGuard® Process: Why It Matters

Previously we explored the innovative LP® SmartGuard® process that takes sustainably-sourced wood and turns it into beautiful yet durable LP treated engineered wood products that are ideal to use for construction of storage buildings and other outdoor structures. Now let’s take a closer look at why this manufacturing process is so important.

Tough to the Core

At LP, we understand that outdoor structures may be subjected to extreme temperatures, along with moisture and insects. This is why so many LP® products are made with our exclusive SmartGuard® process, offering four barriers to damage by these forces.
  • Zinc borate. Zinc borate has effectively been used as a deterrent for termites and fungal growth for decades. This additive is safely used in many household products, and provides long-lasting performance that preserves the beauty of engineered wood.
  • Adhesive resins. LP Shed products offer incredible resistance to impact damage thanks in part to industrial-grade adhesive resins that enhance strength. You can be confident that your shed will stand up to everyday collisions with golf balls, rocks, sticks and more. Special water-resistant waxes coat each strand or fiber of wood for enhanced durability in rainy, humid environments.
  • Resin-saturated overlay. This layer provides the final layer of protection for the products. The resin-saturated overlay helps keep liquid water out while creating a tough-adhering base for the paint color of your choice.
Together, the steps in the SmartGuard process create an advanced wood material that is resistant to fungal decay and termites, even in harsh environments. An LP engineered wood product is the smart choice because of how it is made and how it protects, looks and lasts.
