LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated Sheathing Installation Instructions

Proven to slow down the spread of flames, LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated Sheathing is evaluated to meet code requirements for fire resistant construction. The LP FlameBlock installation process is simple and allows for design flexibility as it can be applied in many different wall assemblies.

Before You Begin

Keep these tips in mind to help your fire-rated sheathing installation go smoothly and to keep the product in great shape.

  • Store panels in clean, dry areas off the ground (indoors if possible)
  • Cover panels with plastic sheets, tarps or the LP FlameBlock unit cover; leave covers open and away from the sides of the panels to allow for air circulation
  • Consider additional protection during extended adverse weather conditions
  • Comply with local safety regulations when installing roof, wall or sub-floor sheathing and all manufacturer instructions
  • If installing on roof, wear skid-resistant shoes

Two People Installing Flameblock Panel

Step by Step: Roof Installation

Step 1
Prepare Panels

To start your LP FlameBlock installation for Construction Types III, IV, V and residential, place skid-resistant side up with the white fire-resistant surface facing down if exposure is from the underside. Install with the white side facing upwards when used under fire-classified roof membranes if exposure is from the outside. For construction types I and II, 2-sided LP FlameBlock sheathing should be used.

Step 2
Place Panels

Install with the long dimension across supports over two or more spans. Provide 1/8˝ gap at panel ends and edges (use a spacer tool to ensure consistent spacing). Panel end joints should occur over framing.

Step 3
Nail Panels

In the absence of project specifications, nail panels 6˝ on center along supported ends and edges and 12˝ on center at intermediate supports. Fasten panels 3/8˝ from panel edges. Use 8d common nails for panels up to 1˝ thick; use 10d common nails for panels up to 1-1/4˝ thick.

Step 4
Finish LP FlameBlock Installation

Cover sheathing as soon as possible with roofing. If edge swelling occurs, sand joints flat between installing roofing.

Step by Step: Wall Installation

Step 1
Consult Assembly Specifications

When installing as part of a wall assembly, LP FlameBlock Fire-Rated Sheathing panels should be installed as specified in the assembly. In the absence of an assembly, panels should be installed vertically with all unsupported panel edges blocked.

Step 2
Consult Construction Plans

To determine the proper orientation of the white fire-resistant panel surface, consult approved construction plans and relevant code requirements before beginning your LP FlameBlock installation.

Step 3
Space Panels

Provide 1/8˝ gap at panel ends and edges (use a spacer tool to ensure consistent spacing).

Step 4
Complete LP FlameBlock Installation

In the absence of project specifications, nail panels 6˝ on center along supported ends and edges and 12˝ on center at intermediate supports. Fasten panels 3/8˝ from panel edges. Use 6d common nails for panels up to 1/2˝ thick, 8d common nails for panels up to 1˝ thick and 10d common nails for panels up to 1-1/4” thick.
